Casa del Dragón
The Casa del Dragón is a centre for contemporary art. It serves as living and working space and provides exhibition opportunities for selected artists. The house is located in the old part of the village Cervera del Maestre (Castellon) in the historic landscape of Maestrazgo. Influenced by the Mediterranean climate and the vicissitudes of history, the Costa del Azahar (orange blossom coast) hosts citizens of many nations and is becoming a melting pot of the new Europe. Mild winters, vast landscapes and the hospitality of the people in the Maestrazgo have attracted many artists from all over Europe. The Casa del Dragón provides for EL-DRAC a refuge for planning, development and execution of new art projects. Regular exhibitions include local artists and art projects.
Activities
On exhibition are artists who promote in their work and life the European thought and who preserve variety in unity. The Casa del Dragón is conceived as house of encounter. It will bring artists from the region together with artists from all over Europe, it offers space for cooperation, for workshops, for exchange of ideas and intercultural projects. The activities will continuously be extended to several places of exhibition - in the village and in the region - and will give the opportunity to experience the variety, the wealth and the power of European art and culture in this region.
The Casa del Dragón regularly organizes art events with European focus. On the basis of visual contemporary art (painting, sculpture, installation, performance) other art forms (music, dance, theatre) will be included. EL-DRAC arranges and organizes the encounter and exchange of the cultural variety.
Establishing a European identity
Think globally - act locally! This is slogan and instruction at the same time and means for EL-DRAC to make Europe understandable. Artists from all over Europe are invited to work on the spot, to show their works here and to exchange thoughts and ideas with local artists in order to stimulate each other. The people of Europe are the future of Europe. The Casa del Dragón promotes and demands European art in the region of Maestrazgo. Art and culture form identity. European art forms the European identity. In the global fight for water, biomass, energy and raw materials a strong European identity will be required in the future. Unity AND variety show the direction.
The dragon and the future
EL DRAC (the dragon), which gave the name to the Casa del Dragón, winds itself as an allegoric figure around a warming chimney. It rests on the geologically young soil of Spain as part of Europe, it looks over the bright country, where fertility, water and sun accumulate. It looks to the northeast, into the future of Spain, into the future of Europe, into our common future.
